Eyemouth

Originally built in 1770, by the mid 19th century, Eyemouth harbour had become one of the most important East Coast fishing ports. Tragically, The Great Storm of 1881 took the lives of 129 Eyemouth fishermen, highlighting the lack of safety at the time and resulting in the building of a new (and safer) harbour in 1884. In the 18th century Eyemouth was also a major centre for smuggling. Huge amounts of brandy, gin, tobacco, tea and even luxury items like spectacles were landed illegally in the village. Nowadays, Eyemouth provides an important landing place for boats and vessels and the sandy beach makes it a popular choice for tourists.
